Case Study: Power Testings Airside British Airways Project “Maintaining critical power for the Airports”

What Happened?

Technical Block C is British Airways Engineering's main headquarters offices, and where most support engineers and senior managers are based, as are Planning, development, and technical support sections. Engineering training facilities are located in this building. The ground floor houses the engine workshops and a large Composite/Sheet Metal repair facility with paint shop. This hangar is critical to the safe operation of British Airways and also used for Long-haul Casualty Maintenance.


Power Testing Ltd were employed to replace the existing LV infrastructure with a new low voltage distribution network, replacing a HV distribution system. The project value was £700k: working closely with Overbury PLC and the British Airways representative Power Testing Ltd successfully project managed and self delivered the upgrade of the Low voltage distribution network within technical block C, to time and budget minimising operational risks.


The works involved careful planning and coordination to ensure shutdowns were kept to a minimum and had as little impact to the business as possible. Through careful project management all business risks were highlighted and plans were put in place to mitigate the risks and ensure they were kept under control.

What Power Testing Achieved?

 

  • Full CDM Regulations compliance and project managed delivery working with Overbury who managed the procurement of switchgear, and the client.
  • Identified and mitigated Project Risks working with the client to agree a delivery approach aligned to power outage constraints on critical circuits.
  • Successful replacement of five low voltage switchrooms removing all high voltage distribution network, and interconnecting the low voltage panels creating a low voltage ring. This included large volumes of cable containment installation, cable pulling, plant movements/disposal, switchgear installation and commissioning, which were safely executed.
