Client: QinetiQ for Ministy Of Defence MoD Shoebryness Project Delivery (2012 /2013)


What Happened?

QinetiQ operates the Range at Shoeburyness on behalf of the MOD under what is known as the Long Term Partnering Agreement (LTPA). It provides defence Test and Evaluation (T & E), and training support services which help ensure the safety and effectiveness of munitions and skills used by the UK Armed Services.

As an MOD firing range, there has been a need for humans, flora, fauna and weapons testing to co-exist on the Shoeburyness site for over 150 years, which is over 9,300 acres. It is home to over 200 private residents living in around 100 dwellings. There are seven working farms managing 7,000 acres between them.

Power Testing Limited successfully tendered and won a £1.2M contract for QinetiQ to upgrade and improve a number of critical substations on the MOD Shoebryness network, as lead principle contractor responsible for project delivery of all the electrical and associated civils work packages.

What Power Testing Achieved?


  • Proactively management relationship with multiple stakeholders needs on site
  • Revised the delivery approach to minimise power outages and use of costly temporary generators
  • Compliance to CDM regulations, including scheduling of subcontract works and end users liaison.
  • Replaced and successful commissioned switchgear and transformers including civil base construction
  • Delivered all associated High and Low voltage cabling including jointing and associated excavation
  • Saved over 20% of project costs for the client as well as delivering the project to schedule
