The Task
During a recent site attendance, Power Testing Ltd engineers identified multiple defects within DSS C at MOD Shoeburyness. The 200kVA transformer was found leaking oil from within the LV endbox, while the 500kVA transformer exhibited leaks from the blanking plate where cooling fins may be installed, as well as signs of leakage on the HV side.
To ensure safe intrusive maintenance, PTL prepared full switching schedules and RAMS. The 200kVA transformer was isolated to allow engineers to inspect and replace internal endbox gaskets. The 500kVA transformer required full isolation and earthing before removing approximately 636 liters of oil into virgin drums, allowing all four blanking plates to be accessed. All gaskets were replaced before reinstalling and allowing the oil to settle.
These works were undertaken efficiently and in accordance with strict safety and environmental protocols, including spill control, PPE compliance, and transformer re-energisation procedures after safe settling time. Due to the vast amount of varying maintenance carried out on site, safety and strategic planning is always paramount.
